Yucca brevifolia Joshua Tree 2

Product Description
This Mojave Desert icon develops a unique set of branches. Every Joshua Tree has a different shape. It can grow to be 40 feet tall. It typically grows between 3-6 thousand feet elevation in the Mojave Desert. At this level it is cooler during the summer and it regularly freezes sometimes with snow in the winter. The colder it gets the more branching occurs with the Joshua Tree. In some areas of the Mojave, winter low temperatures regularly reach single digits. Joshua trees from these areas tend to be shorter, with more branches.
This specimen was removed legally from a privately owned land and has the required Department of Forestry tag. This Joshua Tree will be shipped bare root. This specimen measures about 20 inches across and 36-48 inches tall.
It is one of the trickier yuccas to re-establish. Here are some tips to help improve your probability of success:
- Maintain the same north-south orientation. You'll notice a red or blue painted spot at the base of the Joshua tree. This is the north side of the Joshua tree.
- Before planting fill a large bucket or trash can with water. Add Superthrive or other rooting hormone. Soak the Joshua tree for one hour.
- Use bone meal, Ironite, 1/3 peat moss, and Soil Sulfur in your planting mix.
- Prepare your mix to a muddy consistency. This mudding process eliminates air pockets and once the mud solidifies, it better cements the plant to the ground.
- Based on the size of the, it is better to bury the base 4 to 16 inches deeper than oringinal to better stabilize the Joshua tree. Propping the Joshua tree with 2x4s can be done also.
- Once transplanted, a well should be built around the base and should receive deep watering. The frequency of deep watering is dependent on how much rain you get. Generally, once every three weeks drenching is good enough.
- Mist the Joshua tree frequently, especially during the summer months for the first year. Shade cover should be used during the hot summer days of the desert for two years.
